Good afternoon DCS students, parents and staff. This is Superintendent Emily Lipe.
I would first like to remind you that our Board of Education will meet this evening at 6:30 pm Due to Covid-19 restrictions the meeting will be closed to the public but live streamed for anyone wishing to view remotely. The link to the meeting will be on the district website under Latest News beginning an hour before the meeting. The main purpose of this called meeting is to discuss options for back to school. As a reminder, we have shared information on the district and all school websites regarding the options being offered by Davidson County Schools for this school year. Please contact your child’s school if you have specific questions.
For any parents who completed an application for Davidson Online Academy, please be aware that all contracts are due by Friday, July 24 at midnight. This contract indicates your commitment to attending Davidson Online Academy for an entire year if your child is offered acceptance. If you have already submitted a contract and have since decided that Davidson Online Academy is not the best option for your child, you have until midnight on Friday, July 24 to contact Ashley Lemley and withdraw your contract.
We have received questions regarding students with disabilities and what services will look like for them in the upcoming school year. As we have been planning for the opening of school, we have been looking carefully at our students with disabilities and how to meet their needs with the challenges presented by the pandemic. IEP teams will be reviewing student documents with parents as school reopens to discuss options that are available. Decisions will be made on a case by case basis as to what is most appropriate to facilitate learning whether the student is receiving instruction in person or remotely. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's school or the EC department. They will be happy to help you.
Beginning tomorrow, July 23, our school nutrition department will provide meals via a drive-thru pick up only on Thursday, July 23 and again on Thursday, July 30 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Each child, age 18 and younger, will receive 6 breakfast meals and 6 lunch meals. The schools operating the drive-thrus include North Davidson Middle, Tyro Elementary, Davis-Townsend Elementary, Southmont Elementary, Denton Elementary and Hasty Elementary.
Finally, I want to assure each of you that Davidson County Schools will follow all requirements established by the CDC, the Governor’s Office, the NCDHHS, and NCDPI related to a safe and healthy return to school. If you would like to review the guidance we have used to plan, please visit our district website and click on the large slide with illustrations of these documents. We will observe the 3 W’s—Wait (observe a safe physical distance of 6 feet from one another), Wash—(wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water) and Wear—(wear cloth face coverings inside all of our school buildings, anywhere on school grounds, and while riding buses or other transportation vehicles). We will identify short breaks during the day when masks may be removed, but for the most part, outside of medical or other designated exceptions, masks will be required to be worn all day by students in grades K-12, staff, and any essential visitors.
Thank you and have a good evening.
